Dartmouth is built around the River Dart and is home to the Royal Naval College.  Its naval history goes back to the 14th century when two castles were built on the mouth of the river, Dartmouth and Kingswear Castles, to protect the port from attackers.  This busy and bustling town with its narrow streets is full of interesting shops, cafes and restaurants and the harbour side provides plenty of water based activities including boat trips down the river Dart.

Plymouth is one of the largest cities in Devon and is reknown for both its historic and current naval connections.  Sir Francis Drake allegedly saw the Spanish Armada  whilst playing bowls at the Hoe in 1588.  Plymouth Hoe has stunning views over the Plymouth sound and Drake's island.  There is also the National Maritime Aquarium and the Tinside Lido.  The historical heart of Plymouth is the Barbican area with its Tudor styled housing around the harbour.  Although the town centre is not particularly attractive, Plymouth is a great place for shopping and entertainment with many cinemas and theatres.
